GGT Jam

Sofia Rabiela (she/they) is a bassist of Mexican, Colombian, and Palestinian heritage, and was raised on the south west side of Chicago. Sofia is a product of the jazz education programs in Chicago, being an alum of the Ravinia Jazz Mentorship Program and Chicago Youth Symphony Jazz Orchestra. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Michigan State University studying under bass legend, Rodney Whitaker.

Sofia began her jazz bass journey in 2016, but was surrounded by the music of her heritage since birth. Her compositions and musicianship echo the rich ethnic history of her lineage paired with the deep knowledge and respect for Black American Music.

As Sofia has grown, she has been steadfast in her advocacy for marginalized people in music. Now the host of the gender-inclusive jam session at Clara, Sofia not only wishes to cultivate a positive creative environment, but to have this inclusive atmosphere spread…
